Team Marine was an after school club from Samohi, we focused on spreading awareness about climate change within our community. We helped ban plastic bags in Santa Monica and attended several events around LA to engage closely with young and old people about how they can help live a sustainable life. Part of living sustainably is having a small carbon footprint. In order to reduce this mark on our environment we decided to tackle pollution created by cars running on fossil fuels. If highschool students could convert a car to run on electricity, large car manufactures should be able to provide more sustainable options of transportation.
When I first joined Team Marine the project had the donated Volkswagen and an electric motor, but the progress was stalled. I showed Mr. Kay my previous robotic hand designs, he was very impressed and assigned me the team captain of the project! After that it became a matter of ordering all the missing components which was a huge list of contactors, batteries, adapters and a lot of wires to name a few items. I spent countless hours in the schools autoshop working on fabricating panels and laying out the components.
We were eventually sponsored by Wells Fargo to buy the lithium iron phosphate batteries which were the most expensive part of the project. This is where I met Gadget who guided me with the construction of the batteries and high voltage system. The project basically had to facests the drivetrain with its auxiliary components and batteries with the battery management system. Below are two links to go further into detail about the two sections.
